the beautiful beaches of jacksonville1) The Beaches of Jacksonville
The Jacksonville Beaches, known locally as the "Beaches" or simply the "Beach", are a group of towns and communities on the northern half of an unnamed barrier island on the US state of Florida's First Coast, all of which are suburbs or parts of the city of Jacksonville. Jacksonville is the largest city by land area in the United States, and has 20 miles of beaches, beginning in Mayport to the north and ending with Jacksonville Beach to the south. Most of the beaches are wide and sandy, with plenty of room to play!

fort caroline in jacksonville3) Fort Caroline National Memorial
Built in 1564, Fort Caroline was one of the first European settlements in America, but unfortunately the remains of the original fort have never been located. This replica is based on historical records and personal accounts, and includes reproductions of Timucuan huts and canoes that offer a glimpse of the relationship settlers forged with Native Americans.

kingsley plantation jacksonville4) Kingsley Plantation
One of the oldest plantation homes in Florida, this historic site was owned by Zephaniah Kingsley, one of the biggest slave traders in America. The house and grounds are available for daily guided tours, and the restored slave quarters offer a startling reminder of Florida's history.

6) Downtown Art Walk
jjacksonville downtown art walk
Jacksonville's downtown art walk takes place the first Wednesday of each month over a 15 block radius, between 5 and 9 p.m., rain or shine. Despite only being in existence for a few short years, Art Walk has quickly turned into one of Jacksonville's finest attractions. It features 30 or so galleries, live music, food and drink, and work from local artists.

7) Riverside District
riverside district jacksonvilleThe reasons for visiting Jacksonville's historic Riverside-Avondale district are plenty. For starters, it's one of the most well-preserved historic neighborhoods in the United States, with over 5,000 historic buildings. Riverside-Avondale was named one of the top ten neighborhoods in the U.S. by the American Planning Association. The Financial Times called it "the closest thing you'll find to Greenwich Village in Florida."

8) The Jacksonville Museum of Contemporary Arts
jacksonville museum of contemporary artThe Museum of Contemporary Art -- known as MOCA -- is one of the largest contemporary art galleries in the Southeast United States. It's across the street from the historic Hemming Plaza in downtown Jacksonville, the city's first park. MOCA is adjacent to the downtown Jacksonville library in the former Western Telegraph Co. building. It opened in 2003 in partnership with UNF.

jacksonville landing9) Jacksonville Landing
What would Jacksonville be without the St. John's River? One could easily argue it's the lifeline of Jacksonville. The Jacksonville Landing is a great place to walk alongside its waters, catch a boat ride, have dinner, and even do some shopping. The Landing is also a popular hangout following Jaguars games and features 300 to 400 special events each year.

cape hatteras lighthouse8) The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse - The present lighthouse, officially completed and lit in December 1870, is the second built of three that have been constructed in Buxton. The first Cape Hatteras Lighthouse was built in 1803. It was a sandstone structure 90 feet tall that projected an insufficient light beam using a collection of Argand lamps and reflectors. Sitars to a new height of 150 feet in 1854, and a first order Fresnel lens was installed, the most powerful of its day. During the Civil War in 1861, retreating Confederate soldiers took the Fresnel lamp from the lighthouse, to keep it out of Union hands. Shell damage during the war and structural deterioration prompted the construction of a replacement lighthouse in 1870, the one we enjoy today. The original lighthouse was then demolished in 1871. Whale oil was replaced by kerosene by the 1880’s, and by 1934, the beam was electrified. Beach erosion threatened the base of the lighthouse by 1935, prompting the construction of a third lighthouse some distance away in the Buxton Woods. It was a steel skeleton tower that utilized an airport beacon. Fifteen years later, the 1870 lighthouse was again put back in operation, as erosion patterns changed. The Fresnel lens was vandalized in the 1940’s when the older lighthouse stood empty during those years. Now it uses two active 1000-watt lamps, visible for more than 20 miles. In 1999 the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse was moved a half mile inland, to save it from the encroaching Atlantic. 46368 Old Lighthouse Rd

outer banks jockeys ridge9) Jockey's Ridge State Park- JOCKEY'S RIDGE is the tallest natural sand dune system in the Eastern United States. At Jockey's Ridge State Park you can experience the world of the desert. Shifting sands, high winds, extreme temperatures and a lack of water make the park resemble barren environments such as the Sahara Desert. You also can explore the wonders of an estuarine environment. The tidal waters of the Roanoke Sound, the western boundary of the park, is a rich habitat for a variety of plant and animal life, making these waters the source of much of the sea's bounty. map

graveyard of the atlantic museum outer bx
10) Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum - The waters off North Carolina's Outer Banks entomb thousands of vessels and countless mariners who lost a desperate struggle against the forces of war, piracy and nature. The Graveyard of the Atlantic, with one of the highest densities of shipwrecks in the world, holds some of America's most important maritime history. The website is awesome.- map-
